"Addressing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Care for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities."

PRESENTATION:
Magaña will discuss her research on racial and ethnic disparities in health care services and health outcomes for children with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities and their family caregivers. She will cover how social determinants of health and other factors may contribute as well as the importance of culturally tailored interventions to address these disparities. Magaña will also share the development and testing of a culturally tailored intervention to promote health among Latino families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities as an example.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Sandy Magaña holds the Professorship in Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities in the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin. Magaña currently investigates racial and ethnic disparities among children with autism and developmental disabilities. She studies culturally relevant interventions to address these disparities. She holds a master’s degree in social work from CSU San Bernadino and a Ph.D. from Brandeis University. Magaña completed postdoctoral training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and served as a faculty member there for 12 years. She was also a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Magaña has received research funding from the National Institutes of Mental Health, National Institute on Aging and many others.
