About this Event
Join us at 1pm for a Walking Black History Tour highlighting some of San Antonio's most historic African-American landmarks and locations.
More than ever it is important that we understand the people and places that have helped to shape the identity of the Black Community, here in our city. If all politics are local then we declare the same in regards to history.
There are monuments that we walk or drive past everyday not realizing that these places are a physical representation of our struggle for equality and independence.
THE TOUR
In this Walking Tour we will focus on some of the historic buildings and institutions that are located near Hackberry and Center Street; the heart of the Eastside of SATX.
We will visit staples in the SA Black Community including:
- Carver Cultural Community Center - erected in the early 1900's the Carver has served as the San Antonio Eastside’s foremost gathering place of cultural exchange and performance arts.
- St. Paul United Methodist Church - established in 1866. It was the first African Americans church in San Antonio
- Carter Taylor Mortuary - the oldest Black mortuary in San Antonio, TX
- Myra Davis Hemmings Resource Center - named in honor of Mrs. Myra Davis Hemmings, a founding member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority in 1913
- ... and more
As we tour this area we will explain the history and cultural significance of the places we visit. This Walking Black History Tour is a result of information and history revealed in the documentary film "Walk on the River" and was organized at the request of many of our supporters.
As the city grows and changes, as the “Eastside” (historically considered the Black side of town) becomes more gentrified, as historical locations and landmarks are being demolished or forgotten- we are doing our best to help preserve our history and tell our own story.
We will meet outdoors in front of the Carver Community Cultural Center @ 226 N Hackberry to begin.

This walking tour will take place out doors.
