About the performance:

Samīkṣaṇa celebrates the rich classical musical heritage from Southern India, showcasing compositions from 15th - 19th century, an era during which composers were devoted to crafting music and poetry for Bharatanatyam.

The performance invites the audience to savor masterpieces from the past that captures the essence of human experience - from romantic love to devotional abandonment interwoven with the artistry of todays dancing bodies and minds. It follows the emotional arc of moving from structured precision to empathetic resonance and culminating in the exuberance of dance. The presentation will be in Bharatanatyam style (Classical dance from Southern India) and features Soumya Rajaram and a talented ensemble of Bharatanatyam performers.

About Soumya Rajaram:

Soumya Rajaram is a well-known Bharatanatyam dancer in the Boston area with over two decades of performance experience across USA and India. A grant recipient from the Cultural Council of Massachusetts and New England Foundation for the Arts, she has been invited to perform at the Dance Complex - Route 95 Dances, Festival of Us. Soumya is also featured regularly at the New England Folk Festival, Jose Mateo Ballet theater and at the prestigious annual dance festivals in Chennai, India. Soumya has over 15 years of teaching experience, training her students for a full-length evening recital. Her experience also includes guest lectures and teaching at The Jose Mateo Ballet theater, UMass Boston, Salem State University, The Harvard University and The Phillips Exeter Academy.


About the performance space:

The Julie Ince Thompson Theatre (Studio 1) and pre/post-show reception space (Studio 7) are ADA compliant. There is a motorized lift that can bring one person at a time from the ground floor to the theater. There is no elevator. There are handicap accessible restrooms on both floors.
