About this Event
WEBINAR SESSION INFORMATION
Trust But Verify: Side-Channel Monitoring for Supply Chain ResiliencyThe lack of transparency in today's supply chains threatens the reliability, safety, and security of critical infrastructure. 90% of modern applications are composed of open-source software, which may contain malware and unintended bugs, whereas critical hardware components may be counterfeit or infected by hardware Trojans. In response, legislation has been proposed to make software and hardware integrators liable for vulnerabilities in their systems. Major standardization and certification organizations recommend the creation of bill of materials (BOMs) and scanners to identify vulnerabilities and to support incident response. While steps in the right direction, neither is a silver bullet and must be complemented by run-time analysis.
In this session, we shall discuss (i) the explosive growth of malicious components in public registries; (ii) the roles of XBOMs and vulnerability databases in supply chain best practices; (iii) the limitations of signature-based and behavior-based vulnerability detection approaches; (iv) the remote access to side channels (RASC) platform, a small and inexpensive solution for monitoring critical systems for anomalies in the field; (v) preliminary results for RASC in real-time disassembly and malware detection using power and EM measurements; (vi) key points and paths forward to scale real-time monitoring in order to meet the needs of real-world products and systems; and (vii) the unique training and clearable talent pipeline programs at the University of Florida aimed at reducing the AI talent deficit in all areas of national security.
- Understand the risks associated with open-source software and global hardware supply chains.
- Understand the basics of side-channel analysis and how it can be used to complement eXtended Bill of Materials (XBOMs) and overcome supply chain risks in critical infrastructure.
- Explore and assess real-time side-channel monitoring and compare with existing approaches for detecting faults and anomalies in software and hardware.
- Reflect on improvements, such as incorporation of deep learning and digital twins
- Identify opportunities at the University of Florida for students, veterans, and working professionals who seek training on AI and national security.
This virtual session offers one (1) Professional Development Hour (PDH) certified by the SAME DC Post for live participants.
