💫Join these two special guest instructors for a 3-hour deep-dive into the fundamentals of Brazil’s hottest export to the U.S.! In this workshop, you’ll go ‘from zero to the dance floor’ with the fundamentals of samba de gafieira.
💫Tainah Damasceno is artistic director of Brasarte studio in Berkeley, CA, director of Bloco Ginga Dance Co., and Co-founder of Ewe Retreat in Bahia, Brazil. She brings a lifetime of both classical and Brazilian dance experience to her workshops with the insight of a U.S./Brazilian dual citizen.
💫Jaguaray Santana is a native of Bahia, Brazil, where he and his partner Cissa Barbosa built a samba de gafieira community from scratch. Jaguar has taught and performed all over the world and in Brazil, including at Sambamaniacos in Rio and Sambakana Festival in Montreal, Canada.
🇧🇷What is samba de gafieira?
It is a vibrant, dynamic partner dance that originated in early 20th century in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It emerged from rhythms of African origin, such as lundu and batuque, and is connected to the ancestry of the larger Afro-Brazilian community. Samba de gafieira can be danced to various types of music, such as bossa nova, choro, MPB (“Música Popular Brasileira”), pagode, samba-funk and others. Like tango, it is a walking dance characterized by a close embrace.
