The Epitome of Intimate MusicThe Salisbury Banks Trio ensemble will give a concert of mid-to-late eighteenth century Trio Sonatas on instruments pertaining to the period, including Salisbury’s own Benjamin Banks violin. This concert, at 7.30pm on Saturday November 29th, at the United Reformed Church, should hear this gentle violin sing in the hands of David Morgan, alongside modern baroque flute played by Geraldine Eves, and the plucked strings of spinet played by Duncan Eves.
Benjamin Banks (1727-1795) was baptised in St Thomas’ Church, and he and his wife are buried in the churchyard. During his long career as a luthier, Banks rose to national prominence and was known as ‘the English Amati’ after the great Italian violin maker. The violin to be used in this recital is owned now by Salisbury Museum and is on loan to violinist David Morgan, who also has on loan from the same source a Banks viola.
It will truly be a recital of the Music of Friends, featuring the compositions of Thomas Arne, Georg Philipp Telemann, Joseph Quantz, Johann Hasse, Jean-Marie Leclair, Antonin Kammel and members of the Bach family, played on instruments with which these composers would have been familiar. An enjoyable evening is anticipated.
