About this Event
This is a two-day, multi-agency course for identified, named or designated staff with safeguarding responsibilities. Staff working regularly with children and young people have a duty to learn more about safeguarding as specified in Keeping Children Safe in Education.
The course takes place over 2 days, 0930-1600 both days.
Having completed this course you will be confident in your position as a DSL/DDSL/Named Person within a setting.
Training objectives
- Identify key legislation and guidance underpinning safeguarding children in England.
- Understand the role of the Safeguarding Lead.
- Define the categories, signs, and indicators of abuse and neglect
- Use the Early Help process to be an effective partner.
- Understand the threshold tool and use it effectively.
- Define the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on behaviour and development.
- Understand Contextual Safeguarding and other types of harm that may affect children.
- Identify the barriers preventing a disclosure and factors that make children more vulnerable to neglect.
- Describe the skills required to effectively listen to, report and manage a disclosure.
- Recognise the importance of good recording and sharing information in relation to safeguarding concerns and allegations.
- Describe the multi-agency relationship and the role of the school.
- Define your establishment’s safeguarding policies and identify any steps your own organisation can take to strengthen the safeguarding arrangements.
- Set up systems in school to ensure compliance.
Training Lead
Jon Galling is the Safeguarding Lead for The Harbour Schools Partnership and Dartmoor Multi-Academy Trust.
He is an experienced safeguarding professional who recently served as the Strategic Safeguarding Lead for Devon County Council, supporting schools and settings across the county. This role involved representing Education within the Devon Safeguarding Children’s Partnership, working closely with Ofsted and the DfE and wider Social Care team leaders as a member of the Inclusion and Learning senior team. He also delivered and led a team who provided child protection training for staff, governors and trustees across 9 Local authorities from Oxfordshire to Cornwall.
He has also held safeguarding and leadership roles across multiple schools including as a Headteacher for 11 years contributing to safer practices and school improvement.
