Safe Energy is a Johannesburg-based artist who doesn’t really fit into one box, and that’s the point. His music sits somewhere between storytelling and feeling. There’s intention behind it, but also a kind of openness, like the music is finding its way as much as he is.
Lindokuhle, a guitarist and lead vocalist of Ntozakwantu, blends live, organic sound with subtle digital elements. What he creates isn’t just something you listen to; it’s something you move through.
His sound pulls from AmaHubo, Mbaqanga, jazz, and the spiritual roots of Malombo music, but it’s not traditional in a strict sense. It leans experimental, sometimes raw, sometimes quiet, always honest.
You can hear the influence of artists like Madala Kunene, Philip Tabane, and Sibusisile Xaba, along with a touch of King Krule’s moodier, modern edge.
He’s shared space with some of these influences, too. Opening for Dr Madala Kunene in Johannesburg (March 2023) and performing at the Folk & Griot Festival in December 2024.
If you’re into music that feels real, a bit unpolished, and deeply rooted but still searching, Safe Energy is worth experiencing.
