About this Event
Introduction to our Kwanzaa Kutoa
Annually Safe Black Space celebrates the principles of Kwanzaa while honoring African Americans’ ancestral roots. During our Kwanzaa Kutoa (Giving) Event, we acknowledge our culture, creativity, and connection.
The seven principles of Kwanzaa are aligned with the work of Safe Black Space, which exists to nurture Black wellness. At our Kutoa Celebration we engage in a Kwanzaa ceremony and provide gifts to seven honorees, one for each of the principles!

What is Kwanzaa?
Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, family and culture that honors Black people and our African roots and heritage from December 26th through January 1st. Each day of Kwanzaa is represented by an African principle. The week-long celebration includes people coming together to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the upcoming year, explore the principle of the day, honor our ancestors, feast (Karamu), honor the elders and celebrate the children. This celebratory event also includes things like giving gifts (zawadi), performances, drumming, lighting of the seven candles (mishumaa saba), libation, and more.
Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba) of Kwanzaa
- Umoja (Unity)
- Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
- Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
- Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
- Nia (Purpose)
- Kuumba (Creativity)
- Imani (Faith)
Kwanzaa is not meant to be a replacement of Christmas nor a religious holiday. Anyone can celebrate Kwanzaa and incorporate the seven principles (Nguzo Saba) into their daily lives throughout the year.
