What is Kwanzaa?

Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, family and culture that honors Black people and our African roots and heritage from December 26th through January 1st. Each day is represented by an African principle. The week-long celebration includes people coming together to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the upcoming year, explore the principle of the day, honor our ancestors (Libation), feast (Karamu), honor elders and celebrate children. It also includes giving gifts (zawadis), performances, drumming, and lighting of the seven candles (mishumaa saba).

Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba) of Kwanzaa

  1. Umoja (Unity) - December 26th
  2. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) - December 27th
  3. Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) - December 28th
  4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) - December 29th
  5. Nia (Purpose) - December 30th
  6. Kuumba (Creativity) - December 31st
  7. Imani (Faith) - January 1st

Kwanzaa is not meant to be a replacement of Christmas nor is it a religious holiday. Anyone can celebrate Kwanzaa and incorporate the seven principles (Nguzo Saba) into their daily lives throughout the year.
