About this Event
Sacred Spaces, is an immersive, site specific installation that explores how Asian diasporic communities negotiate, respond to and transform their local cultural environments.
Nirmala Kesumadewi, is a curator and arts & culture programmer with Indonesian heritage. Set in one of London's most culturally diverse boroughs, Hackney, Sacred Spaces will be performed inside St. Augustine’s Tower; Hackneys Oldest Building. The 16th century tower, a symbol of resilience and continuity, becomes both the stage and metaphor for the installations' exploration of heritage and cultural memory.
Indonesian dance, artisan practice and sound design will be employed throughout the installation as guests ascend the tower.
Sacred Spaces intends to reclaim institutional and historical spaces through non Western modes of storytelling. In doing so, Nirmala hopes that guests will bring forward their own ideas and dialogues on identity and resilience in the heart London.
