Like Sabar, Kutiro is named after the type of dancing event, dance or drum being performed and celebrated in Gambia and Senegal.
About this Event
Class Description

[ Sabar] Express your joy with the fun, energetic movements of this upbeat dance from Senegal that is often performed at celebrations like weddings, naming ceremonies and other happy occasions. Class begins with a dynamic warm-up that incorporates Sabar technique. Students then get moving with choreography that will have you popping your lapa (wrap skirt) across the dance floor. Enjoy learning Sabar in this class with live drumming.

[Kutiro] Master teacher Ousmane Sall will be sharing the traditions and joys of the rare technique, Kutiro. Osumane brings warm energy to each class while encouraging students to feel at ease and open themselves up to the liberating rhythms of the Kutiro drum. There are three main drums of the Kutiro Ensemble: kutirindingo (small drum), kutiroba (large drum), and the canon shaped drum, sabaro. All drums are played with long sticks and hands; accompanied with singing.
