About this Event
S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations

This course provides advanced wildland fire behavior training focused on the use of fire behavior calculations to support tactical and operational decision-making. Designed for experienced fireline leaders, S-390 builds on foundational fire behavior knowledge and prepares students to apply quantitative fire behavior analysis in incident operations.

Course Overview

S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations introduces students to the principles and application of fire behavior prediction using fire behavior models and calculations. The course emphasizes interpreting fire behavior outputs and applying them to real-world fire situations to support safe and effective operations.

Topics include:

  • Review of wildland fire behavior principles
  • Fire behavior prediction concepts and limitations
  • Use of fire behavior calculations and modeling outputs
  • Interpreting rate of spread, flame length, and fire intensity
  • Application of fire behavior calculations to tactical decision-making
  • Integration of fire behavior analysis into incident operations and planning

This course meets NWCG training standards and is a required component for several advanced wildland fire positions.
