S-219 Firing Boss training for wildland firefighters supporting ignition and firing operations
About this Event
S-219 Firing Boss

This course provides the nationally recognized training required to prepare firefighters to perform firing operations under the supervision of a qualified Firing Boss. S-219 focuses on the safe, effective, and coordinated use of firing devices to support wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire operations.


Course Overview

S-219 Firing Boss prepares students to participate in and support firing operations on wildland fire incidents. The course emphasizes planning, execution, communication, and safety considerations associated with firing techniques used to meet incident objectives.

Topics include:

  • Roles and responsibilities within firing operations
  • Firing devices, equipment, and ignition methods
  • Firing operations planning and coordination
  • Holding considerations and firefighter safety
  • Communication within firing and holding resources
  • Risk management and situational awareness during firing operations

This course fulfills the NWCG training requirement for the Firing Boss (FIRB) position.

Prerequisites / Eligibility

Students should meet the following prerequisites prior to attending:

  • Completion of Wildland Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) training
  • At least one year of wildland firefighting experience

This course is not intended for entry-level firefighters and assumes prior experience working on wildland fire incidents.


What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Describe firing operations roles and responsibilities
  • Safely use common firing devices and equipment
  • Assist with planning and executing firing operations
  • Communicate effectively with holding and supervisory resources
  • Apply risk management principles during firing operations
