Born into a gospel-rich family in Gause, Texas, Ruthie Foster grew up surrounded by the sounds of church choirs and artists like the Gospel Keynotes and the Blind Boys of Alabama. Encouraged by her mother and grandmother, she developed her talents as a singer, guitarist and songwriter, though she initially preferred writing and playing behind the scenes rather than stepping into the spotlight. Her path eventually led her through community college studies, service in the U.S. Navy performing with the Navy band Pride and time in New York’s songwriting community before returning to Texas to focus on her own voice as a recording artist. Over time, she built a celebrated career marked by acclaimed albums, GRAMMY® nominations, and a recent GRAMMY® win for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
