Ever-evolving Chinese psych-rock band Run Run Run wind up their first tour of Australia with this special "Walking Session" in the intimate confines of The Odeon Richmond. Active since 2014, the band have released several albums on seminal Chinese independent label Maybe Mars - home to bands such as Carsick Cars and Birdstriking - and have played alongside legends such as Michael Rother (Neu!, Kraftwerk, Harmonia) and Gang of Four.
Run Run Run have moved through several iterations to arrive at their current six-piece lineup and their music has morphed with these changes. As you'd expect from their Velvet Underground-referencing name, Run Run Run's albums are full of hypnotic, circling guitar motifs and keen melodic instincts.
Earlier releases skirted closer to Fall-esque post-punkiness, while their latest, 五雷轰心掌 (Five Thunder Heart Palm) , takes a more groove-based, rhythmic turn, embracing traditional folk music influences. Dubbed "Chinese retro-pop," this latest album will catch the ear of any listener partial to Khruangbin and Glass Beams.
Back in 2019, Run Run Run released their debut album 'HOON'. After that, they changed their focus with every album and never played those previous songs again. Despite the flow of members and stylistic flavours, their approach to music-making has never changed. This time, they attempt to replay those 'abandoned songs' with the current six-person lineup. Same ingredients, different spices. Same vehicle, different passengers.
They have picked some slower, more instrumental-driven and apocalyptic songs, most of which haven't been played since 2020. With minimal percussion and looping, winding guitars, reflections on rocks and waterfalls, they would lead you into the humid caves and peaks of Southwest Kweichow.
