Hashing (note this refers to food not cannabis)
The first rule of hashing is that THERE ARE NO RULES! ... there are instead "customs" or "traditions". We do however want to keep people safe so follow instructions from Hares or the Religious Advisor (RA).
The Hash House Harriers is a running club that was founded by British expats in Malaysia, in 1938. Today there are more than 1500 Hash clubs all around the world hosting local runs and international events.
Hash runs are non-competitive social events so there is no 1st place finisher, no medals, or performance goals! You can enjoy a scenic run at your own pace, and a social gathering with food and drink.
Each Hash club has its own distinct culture and vibe. Some enjoy long, fast runs while others enjoy short runs or walks. Some have elaborate ceremonies while others are more casual.
The Victoria Hash House Harriers (VH3)
The Victoria Hash was founded in 1990 and has been going strong ever since! We host bi-weekly runs without fail every second Saturday at 2:30 pm. There also are Dog Hashes and Darkside (new moon) hashes. We have a casual and easy-going vibe.
What we do
We have a Hounds & Hares Run (aka Paper chase) which is a fun, non-competitive run where the route is marked on the ground with chalk, flour or other biodegradable stuff. The "hare" is a volunteer who plans the run and marks the trail. The "hounds" are the other runners who follow the trail.
There are no monthly dues and no "joining." Nobody cares how fast or slow you run, or what you do for a living. Just come out and run with us.
Before the running/walking starts we 'circle-up' - where there are introductions, and the Hares give instructions on the trail markings.
When you first arrive find the 'Hash Cash' will take down your name (to identify the body later), and collect your run fee (normally that gives you 2 beers, but there may be extra on special occasions). There is no charge on your first run (your 'virgin' run).
Beer
We enjoy our beer (or cider option), but consumption is optional. Let us know your preference and we will provide water and non-alcoholic beer. There is never any obligation to drink alcohol.
On the trail
We follow trails of flour, many false, but we try hard not to lose anyone!! The point to false trails is to allow slower runners/walkers to keep up with the faster ones. At the beginning of every run one of the Hares will describe the marks they have used, especially any special marks, and give instructions, especially those related to any unusual marks. Because the Dark Side is run, well, in the dark, you probably want to bring a light.
By convention all hashs are called runs, but the VH3 recognized that there are walkers too, and we welcome them. Not all hashers run, and there are times when a hasher recovering from too much beer, or from injury, needs to walk, and get out into the fresh air. Often there are walkers routes, or a walkers map, but always let the Hare(s) know if you are a walker (especially if he forgets to ask), and you will be accommodated as best can be.
On Afters (after the run/walk)
After the Hash we will go to a pub or the like.
