The Center is a dedicated non-profit organization working to conserve and protect the habitats of native birds through education, rehabilitation, and research. Each year, the center hosts various educational programs featuring avian ambassadors. These permanently injured birds help educate the public.
The Center's long-term goal is to create a facility that can be visited by the public, will provide raptor rehabilitation services in western South Dakota, and will conduct scientific research on birds found in our region. In 2017, Black Hills Raptor Center purchased five acres of land from a couple who were members of the center’s board of directors. Since then, they’ve constructed two buildings: a home for Engler, the full-time caretaker, and a home for the birds to live in.
