ROD CORDNER BIO
Rod Cordner can be best described as having a strong northern voice, and a performance reminiscent of Christy Moore! His solo music is a blend of the contemporary, with a touch of traditional Irish, Celtic and Americana styles with creative lyrical songwriting.
He has been on the road for over 5 decades and over the years has released a total of 15 recordings on vinyl and CD, working in more than 20 countries.
In the mid 70s Rod began songwriting and recorded two solo albums. He then moved totally into the mainstream folk music scene and began sharing his talent across Europe and wider as a singer/songwriter. In the early 80s he teamed up with various musicians including recording two albums on the Dutch GMI Record label with the top Irish mandolin player Tim Manley.
Later in the 80s Rod formed a regular musical partnership with the versatile and gifted French fiddle playing multi-instrumentalist Jean-Pierre Rudolph from Strasbourg, combining the wit of the Irish with the romance of the French. The popular Cordner and Rudolph played a unique music style of contemporary Irish/Celtic folk with a strong flavour of Swing Jazz and a little touch of Americana. During this period they produced nine albums. "Live In Karlsruhe", released in 2021 on Redsky Music Records, was the first ever Cordner and Rudolph live concert release. It was lost and forgotten for too many years, hidden away in the vaults and contains popular tracks never recorded before.
Rod’s touring has also taken him to work in more than 20 countries appearing at such major events and venues as:
Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland
The Mean Fiddler, London
The Fabrick Hamburg, Germany
Greenbelt Arts Festival, England
Flevo Festival, Netherlands
Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scotland
Big Boss Festival, Switzerland
Cornerstone Festival, Chicago, USA
Rod has appeared with such artists as Pete Seeger, Stocktons Wing, Luka Bloom, The Incredible String Band, Barry McGuire, Steeleye Span, Tommy Makem, Tommy Sands and dozens more. He also once sung on the same TV show as Johnny Cash in Holland.
And he has made over 50 television appearances plus lots of radio performances.
QUOTES:
"Rodney Cordner's strong distinctive Northern voice and composer of evocative melodies like the inventive delicacy "Wild Stones“… Rodney Cordner’s songwriting is lyrically sharp and steeped in social commentary. A talented songsmith he also possesses a manic sense of wickedly black humour…“ Irish Music Magazine
"Cordner's original songs deliver lyrical punches both swift and concise whether as social commentator or compassionate lyricist or on the hilarious" Fiddle Sticks Folk Roots Magazine
"Cordner shows that he is a master songwriter, adept at penning tunes in a number of different styles and these songs manage to make social comment without being preachy and express humour without compromising intelligence." Ewan Jones Cross Rhythms
