Founded in 2023 in Silicon Valley, the Lobster Cup International began as a collaborative effort by local FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams, including Dry Ice Robotics and Kuriosity Robotics, to create an elite off-season world invitational. The inaugural event was held on July 30, 2023, and quickly distinguished itself by introducing high-stakes "rule twists" to existing competition formats, challenging veteran teams to adapt their engineering and strategy in real-time. Since its debut, the competition has rapidly scaled from a specialized local meet into a massive global fixture hosted at the San Mateo Event Center, attracting over a thousand participants and serving as a premier platform for international robotics collaboration.
