Travel to the beautiful riverside city of Whanganui behind one of our magnificent coal-fired steam locomotives. Once there, you can explore Whanganui at your leisure, or choose to enjoy a relaxing cruise along the Whanganui River aboard the historic coal-fired paddle steamer PS Waimarie.Departing the Kāpiti Coast while much of the country is still asleep, our journey quickly leaves the coast behind and winds through the rural landscapes of the Horowhenua. After a stop in Palmerston North, we head north along the Main Trunk through Feilding and Marton, before turning onto the Marton–New Plymouth Line for the final stretch into Whanganui. Crossing the mighty Whanganui River, we then roll slowly down the short 5km branch line to Taupō Quay, right in the heart of the city’s riverfront.
Option 1 - Sail On The Queen Of The River - Waimarie
Departing from the Riverboat Centre Wharf, your cruise journeys upstream along Te Awa Tupua – the Whanganui River, revealing spectacular views of Whanganui best experienced from the water. Informative onboard commentary highlights the rich riverboat heritage and key landmarks along the way. Guests can also view the working boiler that powers the paddle steamer, and may even have the opportunity to meet the homing pigeons and send a message back to the Riverboat Centre in true riverboat tradition.
