About this Event
Experience the mesmerizing music of Ritchaz Cabral, a Portuguese artist of African heritage, live in London. With his band, he combines traditional genres of batuku and funana from Cape Verde with modern influences, creating a captivating and soulful performance.
Batuku, a centuries-old genre, survived the Portuguese Empire's era of slavery and is primarily sung and danced by women. Funana, originating in the 1950s, became an anthem of Cape Verdean independence. Through his heartfelt lyrics in Creole, Portuguese, and English, Ritchaz addresses themes of love, harmony, racism, and social marginalization.
His music blends melancholic tones for reflection and upbeat rhythms for dancing, accompanied by guitar arrangements and euphoric percussion. Collaborating with London-based musicians, Ritchaz incorporates jazz and afrobeat, creating a universal musical experience.
Join us for an unforgettable night of cultural fusion as Ritchaz Cabral and his band showcase their unique sound. Prepare to be moved and inspired by their captivating melodies and heartfelt messages.
