Since July of 2024, writer/director K Hank Jost has been teaming up with composers Andrew Links and Daniel Hass to bring two great artforms into conversation with each other—music and the written word. Taking the work of promising writers at all stages of their career, upstarts and established best-sellers alike, Jost, Links, and Hass together delve into the deep structures of the text and draw to the surface the inner music present in all great literary work. Rising Canon is not simply a reading of great stories soundtracked by a live band, but the product of a generative exchange between two modes of expression. Each performance is a unique, multivocal drama—a spoken-word opera emergent from the resonance of juxtaposed text, composed and improvised music, and group collaboration.
