About this Event
The course is open to anyone working in Scottish Education, particularly teaching practitioners across all establishments.
We will:
- develop our understanding of Human Rights and the UNCRC
- explore the UNCRC in some detail, and how it maps to key priorities in Scottish education and society, such as GIRFEC, the UNCRC (Incorporation) Bill and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- support you to explore some of the complex debates and language which exist in relation to children’s rights
- try out ways to support learning about, through and for rights, within classroom learning and whole school initiatives
- explore ways to support pupil participation in support of UNCRC Article 12
This course will be useful to teaching colleagues working in all sectors in Scotland who are looking to develop their understanding, confidence and practice in children's rights. Please note: we offer this course regularly. Please contact us if you would like to know more about the content and whether it is suitable for where you are in your rights journey.
All courses run by the Scottish Development Education Centres are highly interactive, both to model the participatory global citizenship approach, and so we can share activities and methodologies for use in the classroom. This course will make use of breakout rooms and simple digital participation tools (all necessary instructions will be given!). It can be hard to participate fully on a phone or tablet, so we highly recommend you join the course on a desktop or laptop computer, with your microphone and video enabled.
Please note this course will be held on Zoom to make use of the interactive capabilities of this platform. Depending on your Local Authority, it might be easier to access the course on your own personal computer rather than a council one.
If you have particular access needs, please contact [email protected] so we can work together to create as positive an experience for you as we can.
All 32 local authority areas in Scotland are covered by a Development Education Centre – for full details, including locations and how to contact your local DEC, please visit is
