HISTORY
Originally built in 1254 as a canon’s residence, The Wardrobe was later repurposed in the 15th century to store the Bishop of Salisbury’s robes—hence its name .
Over centuries it served various roles: leased to tenants from the late 16th century, requisitioned in 1939 by the War Office for the Auxiliary Territorial Service during WWII, and from 1945–1969 it hosted the Diocesan Training College for schoolmistresses. In 1959, the Royal Berkshire Regiment and the Wiltshire Regiment merged to form the Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment (DERR). Though regiments merged, their museums remained separate—Reading (Berkshire) and Devizes (Wiltshire)—until a unified museum site was sought. A charitable trust leased the Wardrobe from the Cathedral in 1978, and after restoration the museum opened on 29 July 1982, inaugurated by HRH Prince Philip as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment Museum. It was renamed “Redcoats in the Wardrobe” in 1991, then became the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire & Wiltshire Regiment (Salisbury) Museum in 1994 following another amalgamation with the Gloucestershire Regiment. In February 2007, the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire & Wiltshire Light Infantry merged into the newly formed Rifles Regiment. Consequently, the museum adopted the name The Rifles (Berkshire & Wiltshire) Museum. Since then, it has continued to evolve, hosting temporary exhibitions and expanding its collections to cover the full military history of both counties. The museum is owned and managed by the Rifles Wardrobe & Museum Trust, a charity created by the regiment, which holds a 99-year lease from 1978.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The Cavalier: Visitors and staff often report seeing a figure dressed in 17th‑century cavalier attire roaming empty corridors.
The Grey Lady: A spectral woman dressed in grey—or sometimes green, possibly Margaret Hussey, who died in 1941—has been spotted in the museum’s regimental room and former hostel quarters.
Child Spirits: Some ghost hunters describe hearing children crying or laughing, along with footsteps in rooms devoid of people.
Cold spots, footsteps and voices have been heard in the museum. K2 spikes, and good responses when using the Estes method
