Tenor saxophonist and composer Rico Jones is one of the most compelling voices to emerge in contemporary jazz. His debut album BloodLines received a ★★★★ review from DownBeat Magazine and placement in among best albums of 2025, with critic Howard Mandel writing that “Jones and company seek meaning if not transcendence,” placing him among a generation of artists rooted in the Black church tradition that shaped John Coltrane. Internationally, Paris Move declared BloodLines to “signal Jones’s arrival among the upper echelon of American composers,” calling it a deeply personal body of work that rewards attentive listening.
Jones’s artistry is grounded in tradition yet unmistakably forward-looking. Saxophone master Vincent Herring states: “Rico is one of the few original voices emerging. His musicianship and passion have forged an original voice we will joyfully be hearing more from in the future.” Guided by mentors including George Coleman, Charles McPherson, Vincent Herring, Bennie Maupin, Bobby Watson, and even camaraderie with Sonny Rollins, Jones stands firmly within a living lineage of the music.
Based in Harlem, New York, Rico Jones is an active part of the fabric of jazz today, as a bandleader, collaborator, composer, and educator. He has appeared at the Blue Note NYC as a special guest with Esperanza Spalding, performed with the Mingus Big Band, toured internationally, and collaborated with many of the music’s leading figures. With BloodLines, Jones announces himself not only as a virtuoso saxophonist, but as a serious composer and storyteller carrying the spiritual and cultural continuum of jazz forward.
