Mariposa Center for Safety (formerly the YWCA of Pueblo) announces the renovation of the historic YWCA pool, which will now serve as overflow space for Teresa’s Place Safe Child Exchange and as a revenue-generating community space. In partnership with the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce, a ribbon cutting celebration will be held Thursday, March 26, from 4:30–6:30 p.m. at Mariposa Center for Safety, 801 N. Santa Fe Ave.
With support from the State Historic Preservation Office, the Pueblo Historic Preservation Commission, and funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the historic YWCA pool has been safely encapsulated to preserve its architectural and historical integrity. HGF Architects, Inc. and H.W. Houston Construction were selected to complete the project due to their extensive experience in historic preservation.
This thoughtful renovation transforms a long-unused area into a vibrant and productive shared space that will be available for educational programs, community gatherings, and special events, while also supporting the expanded services of Teresa’s Place Child Safety Exchange. The additional space will allow both front and back entry for families utilizing Teresa’s Place and provide overflow space, increasing accessibility and safety for the families served.
Mariposa Center for Safety recognizes the deep connection many community members have to the historic pool and the memories it represents. The pool was closed in 2018 due to significant maintenance and financial challenges and has remained unused since that time. Following extensive evaluation, it was determined that the cost to fully renovate and operate the pool was prohibitive and no longer aligned with the organization’s mission.
To honor its legacy, Mariposa Center for Safety will commemorate the historic pool with photos and artwork highlighting the impact the pool had on the community over the decades.
Refreshments will be served.
