The frame drum, one of the world’s oldest and most evocative instruments, carries a timeless sound that traces its origins to ancient Mesopotamia, Anatolia, and Egypt, and has since spread across cultures worldwide. In this workshop, we’ll explore its rhythmic beauty and learn techniques that connect tradition with modernity.
What’s in it?
- The art of lap-style and upright (hand-held) playing positions
- Traditional rhythms from the Middle East, Mediterranean, and Contemporary styles
- Foundations of ornamentation on Frame Drums
- Rhythmic compositions based by the work of Zohar Fresco and Glen Velez
- Advanced techniques for lap-style playing
- Tailored exercises to develop inner pulse and group interplay
- Historical Background of Frame Drums
Who:
Level: Beginner & Intermediate
Whether you're new to percussion, an experienced musician looking to expand your skills, or simply curious, this workshop offers an accessible introduction to frame drumming and opportunities to deepen your playing.
The workshop will primarily focus on the Bendir and Tar types of frame drums.
- Teaching prioritizes the use of rhythmic vocalizations and non-Western notation. Western notation exercises can be provided upon request.
- Video recordings will be provided between classes, covering the essential topics from each lesson.
- Participants will also have access to materials from the 1st edition of the workshop.
- The workshop will primarily focus on the Bendir and Tar types of frame drums.
Practical Details:
Cost:
250 kr/month (monthly commitment) or
1200 kr for the entire workshop (no instrument rental fee)
Instrument Rental:
- 25 kr/month
- Includes the option to take the instrument home
- Limited number of frame drums available

About Pedro Carapinha:
Pedro is a Portuguese multi-percussionist based in Aarhus, with collaborations across various genres. His approach to frame drums is inspired by the work of masters like Glen Velez and Zohar Fresco.
