About this Event
The UK government repeatedly justifies its horrific immigration policies and laws impacting forced migrants on grounds that such policies and laws are what the people want. However, a poll commissioned by Together with Refugees shows that 80% of people in Britain want a better, fairer, and more compassionate asylum system.
Aimed at young people between the ages 14 and 17, this workshop will create a safe space to have constructive conversations on the realities of forced migration today.
‣ In the first hour, we will read and discuss poems by Glasgow-based women refugees and asylum seekers to tackle contemporary issues with informed insight. Poems will be selected from a recent collection published by Open Book in partnership with Maryhill Integration Network.
‣ In the second hour, we will write our own creative messages of solidarity to support Scottish Refugee Council’s Fair Begins Here campaign. Writing creative messages will help young people in schools to: 1) use art and literature as a starting point to bring about positive social change; and 2) contribute to nationwide campaigns led by activists and professionals. Photos of messages will be posted on GoMA Youth Group's social media with the hashtag #FairBeginsHere.
The session is free and suitable for young people between the ages 14 and 17. High school students are welcome to join us in groups.
The workshop will take place in the studio at GoMA, which is accessible via lift and stairs. There is an accessible toilet on the same level and a quiet space close by for anyone who would like to use it.
