The holidays can be tough. Expensive, stressful, pulling you simultaneously in the directions of “you’re not doing enough” and “slow down and savor every moment” — it’s a lot to manage. And so many movies are about the importance of maintaining a child-like belief in the magic of the Christmas spirit. But very few movies are brave enough to present the other side of that question: what happens when you lose that spirit?
Well, Krampus has an answer. A supernatural, predatory beast straight from the darkest corners of Alpine folklore shows up to tear you to gory chunks and drag your family to hell. Certainly demands more attention than the Elf on your Shelf. Young Max, put off by the constant bickering of his mom and dad (Toni Colette and Adam Scott) and the rudeness of his extended family (David Koechner and others), tears up his letter to Santa. This awakens the horrific Krampus, who pursues them all with terrifying black magic. Can its bloody fury be sated? Did you remember to leave out cookies?
