Rewind & Shine Balboa Workshop with Shani and Augie

We’re thrilled to announce that Bal Haus is bringing Shani Brown and Augie Freeman to the Bay Area for an incredible Balboa workshop!
With a combined dance experience spanning over four decades, Shani and Augie offer a deep and classic perspective on Balboa. Augie began dancing Balboa in 2003, discovering it as a powerful creative outlet and studying in earnest with legends such as Nick Williams and Sylvia Sykes in Southern California. Shani began her Balboa journey in 1998 in Orange County, California—Balboa’s heartland—where she refined her social dance skills and intricate footwork under the guidance of legendary “old-timer” Balboa dancers such as Willie Desatoff, Hal and Marge Takier, Bart Bartolo, Jack Carey and many others.
This workshop will give you the chance to learn from their wealth of knowledge and gain insights into the timeless styles of Balboa’s original dancers.
Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to elevate your dancing and connect with the heart of Balboa!
This workshop is open to dancers of all levels so long as they have an understanding of Balboa or swing dance fundamentals. It is more suitable for dancers who are comfortable dancing all basic Balboa moves at 180+ BPM and are ready to refine their skills.
***SCHEDULE***
The entire workshop is 4 hours long (1pm - 5pm) with breaks between classes so that you can rest, ask teachers questions, get feedback, and practice with other fellow workshop attendees.
***PRICE***
Register and secure your spot as early as possible so you won’t have to endure the pain of missing out should the workshop sell out! Workshop attendees also receive FREE admission to the evening Bal Haus dance party.
$80 Pre-registration
$90 Walk-in (Cash or Venmo only. We may not accept walk-in registration if class is full or lead/follow severely unbalanced.)
Please use the ticket link to register. https://square.link/u/zKa3Mm4o
(Venmo is also accepted, please send us a message to inquire the info.)
***PRIVATE LESSONS***
Both Shani and Augie are available for private lessons while they are in town (Jan 31 - Feb 4). If you’re interested in a lesson please contact us and we’ll be happy to provide you with more information.
***ABOUT SHANI***
Shani hails from sunny southern California. She is best known for her fast, syncopated Balboa footwork, tight swing style and soft connection—which has been said to feel like a ‘warm hug’. As an instructor, she strives to make dancing effortless, combining foundational basics with the soft skills of connection and personal body awareness to develop one's smooth flow and style.
***ABOUT AUGIE***
Augie discovered Balboa in 2003 during a break from his career as an active-duty Marine. After a life-threatening second tour in Iraq, he found the dance to be a powerful force in overcoming PTSD. He trained with legends like Sylvia Sykes and Nick Williams, won championships, was inducted into the Swing Dance Hall of Fame, and even appeared in the 2016 documentary Alive and Kicking. Above all, Augie is a passionate teacher dedicated to helping students achieve their goals, whether competitive or purely for the love of the dance.
***PUBLIC SAFETY and LAST-MINUTE CANCELLATIONS***
If you cannot attend the workshop due to health concerns, you may request a refund or credit up to two hours before the workshop begins. Alternatively, help us avoid the transaction fee charged by Square by directly transferring your class pass to another person. Please note that we cannot accommodate cancellations for other reasons. For assistance, email us at [email protected] or send us a message on Facebook.
