About this Event

This exciting in-person event brings to the public cutting-edge genetics research into childhood cancer. Come along to the Herschel Building at Newcastle University to find out more.

This free event is designed to bridge the gap between complex scientific discoveries and everyday understanding, showcasing the revolutionary work happening right here at Newcastle University's Wolfson Childhood Cancer Research Centre .

Expect high-impact talks, lab tour opportunities, and a chance to meet the amazing researchers who are pushing the boundaries of childhood cancer research to make treatments kinder and more specific, with the ultimate goal of curing this indiscriminate disease. There will also be interactive activities that make learning about genetics and childhood cancer engaging and accessible for everyone.

What to expect

  • Young Scientist Zone: Get hands-on with engaging activities run by our scientists.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Lab Tours: Visit the labs where pioneering research is taking place. See how treatments are developed for childhood cancers and how, thanks to Children's Cancer North's supporters, research is being funded that helps children and families across the North East and Cumbria and beyond.
  • Research Poster Display: Hear from the researchers and the current projects they are working on. View a visual display of their research to see the 'bigger picture' of their work.
  • Meet the Experts: Chat one-on-one with researchers and clinicians, explore their current projects, and ask your questions in the dedicated expert zone.
  • Keynote Speech: Hear from Professor Steve Clifford - Chair of Molecular Paediatric Oncology & Director, Newcastle University Centre for Cancer.
  • Panel Discussion: Hosted by Dr Lisa Russell - Senior Researcher, this will involve inspiring stories from the researchers about their exciting career paths into their role.

The event is open to adults, young people, and children, and it will be a relaxed, interactive and informative session. For younger visitors, we have a special Young Scientists’ Zone staffed by the Newcastle University research team. Lab tours are open to adults and young people over the age of 16. Keynote and Panel Talk

Info: Professor Steve Clifford - Chair of Molecular Paediatric Oncology & Director, Newcastle University Centre for Cancer will give a keynote on the impact of the research being undertaken, it's importance for children locally and how it contributes to the global picture into childhood cancer research. Following this, Dr Lisa Russell will lead a panel discussion with her fellow researchers from the Wolfson Childhood Cancer Research Centre.
