Te Manaia Jennings explores themes of freedom, renewal, and liberation through abstract realism. This exhibition presents powerful wolves, delicate butterflies, and women intimately entwined with nature, often accompanied by birds, stars, or butterflies emerging from within. Together, these motifs evoke strength, transformation, and the untamed spirit of the natural world. Each work reflects a journey of growth, healing, and the quiet liberation that comes with embracing change.Through her practice, Jennings invites viewers into a realm where nature and spirit converge, celebrating the profound freedom found in transformation. These works were created over an extended period, often guided by intuition rather than intention. She speaks of being drawn instinctively to certain colours, forms, or subjects without fully understanding why. Over time, however, a unifying narrative revealed itself, a return to self, and a rediscovery of inner freedom and wholeness. This awakening mirrors Jennings’ own journey over recent years, shaped deeply by her faith in Jesus.
As the exhibition took form, Jennings found herself asking: What is the story here? What is this exhibition called? The word that consistently emerged was revival. Biblically, revival is defined as restoring to life, breathing life anew, and strengthening what has grown weary. This concept lies at the heart of the exhibition.
Before fully committing to art, Jennings aspired to become a psychologist. She holds a Bachelor of Health Science in Psychology and has worked in children’s mental health within school settings. While she found this work deeply meaningful, her calling to paint never faded, only intensifying with time.
Throughout her life, Jennings has navigated significant personal challenges, including struggles with mental health and chronic physical pain resulting from severe congenital scoliosis. There were moments when perseverance felt impossible. Yet it is precisely in these moments that revival is found. Life is often demanding, but within us exists the capacity to rise, to heal, and to be made new and strong once again.
