REVEAL Workshop: towards a community of practice for dealing with ethical dilemmas in Scottish library and information practice
About this Event

This workshop will take place on the 31st of July from 12:30pm-4pm, with a lunch provided at the beginning. Taking place at the CILIPS Office at 152 Bath Street Glasgow, please book using this page as spaces are limited and expected to sell out quickly!

In a world where libraries find themselves embroiled in the so-called “culture wars”, the REVEAL project explored the importance of core ethical values in terms of underpinning advocacy for libraries, including the importance of libraries supporting human rights such as intellectual freedom and freedom from censorship. The outputs developed for the project were a set of free learning resources for library staff for global use and adaptation within their advocacy, built on core ethical values in librarianship.

A key finding in the project was that librarians often do not get enough time to engage with their profession’s ethical writings or have a safe space for discussing and reflecting on them. Workshops have revealed that library staff wish to build and expand on the REVEAL materials through deliberation and debate with colleagues, hence this focused workshop gaining feedback and input from colleagues on how this can be facilitated.

As well as gaining feedback on the usefulness of REVEAL materials more broadly, key intended effect of the workshop is to allow librarians the space, time, and opportunity to feel empowered in their “culture wars” challenges by providing a pathway towards solutions for them to be able to reflect and deliberate on key ethical issues, and as a result make more reflective, confident and ethically grounded decisions. Providing the mechanisms and tools for them to discuss their own experiences and needs related to ethical challenges should also help to start to build strong networks of support/communities of practice in the area of professional ethics in librarianship in Scotland (which currently do not exist).

This interactive and practical workshop builds on the previous activities undertaken for the REVEAL project by gaining feedback from a wider range of librarians as to how the project can be enhanced and expanded to provide collective spaces for librarians to discuss important ethical challenges and issues in an open way, and in doing so reinforce commitment to professional values and enhance the strength professional practice can gain from this collective activity.

Please include any accessibility requirements on your booking form or feel free to email the team at [email protected] and we'll be happy to help.

This workshop has been funded by the University of Glasgow through the College of Arts and Humanities Impact Development & Evaluation Fund
