About this Event
Here's a sample of what you can expect at the ReuseApalooza:
REGISTRATION: opens at 8:00 am and we encourage you to register in advance otherwise be sure to have $25 cash at the door. If you have your own name tag please bring it. We will provide reusable name tags that we ask you leave at the registration table when you depart.
REPAIR FAIR (drop off items from 8 to 8:45 and pick up by 4:00): In conjunction with the ReuseApalooza, the Vermont State College engineering department and students will set up shop in Morrill Hall and attempt to repair your broken electronic device while you attend the days’ event in the Campus Center Building. Think radio, remote control, coffee maker, clock. To participate we ask you bring just one item, put your name and phone number on a piece of tape and affix to the item, and let staff know at drop-off what you may have already tried to do to fix it…if anything!
DROP AND SWAP: (drop off items from 8 to 8:45 and pick up by 4:30) Limit to one small item (book, jewelry, sweater, plate, ect) that you would love to pass along to a new home. Bring one and take one. Be kind and ensure items are clean, working, and in good shape…no cracks, tears mission pieces etc.
WELCOME ALEX EAVES: https://www.escapethewaste.com/
Alex considers himself an “edutainer” combining important facts about waste with the lighter side of reuse. He has an interesting journey into finding his niche in reuse and has documented some aspects of this trajectory. We encourage you to watch these documentaries before you attend the conference.
RE-STORY HOUR: Presenters will have approximately 6 minutes to share their reduce, reuse, repair story in these lightening talks to prompt forward thinking, encourage collaboration, express concerns or needs, offer valuable lessons and otherwise share the joy in working in this space. Sign-up in advance with Susan Alexander, [email protected]. Due to time we will need to limit the number and length of talks so practice your delivery with a stop watch and don’t feel bad if we cut you off!
WORLD CAFÉ CONVERSATIONS: This is the working part of the morning where attendees will rotate every 20-minutes through a maximum of 3 tables each with a different topic. Participants are encouraged to engage in thoughtful and respectful conversation and make some notes to report back.
These topics will include but not be limited to:
--consumer buying habits to prioritize reuse and repair
--education and skill training for the repair workforce
--the building blocks for creating a permanent and productive Resue VT network
--a comprehensive reuse and repair directory
--impacts of reuse on the climate
-- send us your idea for a topic that aligns with improving the reuse and repair space
LUNCH BREAK: In the spirit of the reason for bringing this community together we wish to make this a waste-less event. Therefore, attendees are asked to bring their own durable cups (including coffee mugs), plates, bowls, silverware, leftover container and cloth napkin. A food scrap bucket will be provided and yet we hope that bucket goes home empty!
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE: After lunch you are encouraged to tour through 4 classrooms filled with vendors, the swap shop, exhibitors, participate in Ben Kogans can-carrier sorting program, create some art on our poster wall, consider signing a pledge to “buy nothing”, or simply sit and converse with others in this rich and creative community.
THE MANY SHADES OF “RE” PANEL DISCUSSION: We have invited a number of individuals who have established a footprint in the “re” world to provide their perspective on the many facets of reuse from waste management, poverty alleviation, the circular economy, building a business and employing Vermonters, contributing economically, encouraging a reuse ethos, and otherwise share the trials and tribulations of working in this space. Q&A for speakers will follow although time will be limited.
