Based on the 2006 programmatic album of the same name, Retrospective 53 minutes reimagines ZUN’s original music and story into a new one-act ballet. All aboard the Hiroshige No. 36! This story follows two university students who take a trip from Kyōto to Tokyo on the futuristic Boyu-Tōkaidō Shinkansen. On this 53 minute journey, the two learn about the “Kaleido-screen”. This screen lines the inside of the Shinkansen and displays the view from the old Tōkaidō road which inspired Utagawa Hiroshige to create his famous Ukiyo-e work The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. Together they discuss the differences between the two cities and if it is acceptable to abandon reality for fantasy.
