About this Event

Do you want to learn more about how to manage common invasive plant species in Ontario?
Do you want to explore alternative and positive ways of using these vigorous plants at the same time?
Would you find it uplifting to hang out with some native plants and plant people while eating snacks?
Then come to this workshop! Hosted by Izzy Mink and Katie Mathieu at the Toronto Plant Market. Saturday May 4th. 10 am - noon.

This hands-on workshop will include:

  • Making your own little native bee hotels out of Phragmites and beeswax
  • Snacking on invasive wild mustard pesto (and Japanese knotweed if we can find some!)
  • Using English ivy to make laundry detergent
  • Learning about how the city approaches invasive species
  • Talking about how invasive plant species impact the local ecologies
  • Exploring positive uses for these plants that are most likely here to stay.

SCHEDULE:
10 am: Arrive, snack, and settle in.
Talks begin at 10:15 and end at 10:45 am.
10:45 am - noon: We build the bee hotels!
Hang out. Eat stuff. Chat about plants.

This workshop is PWYC (Pay What You Can) with a suggested donation of $25.

Izzy Mink is a recent graduate with a master’s in landscape architecture and a background in the visual arts. She loves spending time making things and talking about plants and material loops. In her work, she advocates for social responsibility, the agency of the non-human world, and the creative reuse of materials often overlooked or considered “waste”.

Katie Mathieu is a private chef and Permaculture designer and the manager of the Toronto Plant Market. She wants to hear all about your food gardens and trap you here with snacks.

The Toronto Plant Market will open for business from 9 am - 2 pm, and you will be welcome to explore and shop during this workshop. Thank you to J. Scott MacIvor for his research into Phragmites and native bee hotels! See you at market :)
