About this Event
This class is inspired by the traditional retablo. Retablos originate from a blend of Indigenous artistry, centuries of Catholic iconography, and Spanish cultural influence. Known as láminas in Mexico, traditional retablos were small paintings on tin, zinc, wood, or copper, often used in home altars to honor Catholic saints.
In this class, participants will explore creative techniques for painting wooden retablos in a modern, illustrative style. While the format is rooted in tradition, pieces created in this course need not adhere to religious motifs. Retablos in this class can be playful, whimsical, and symbolic in other ways that showcase the artist's unique vision. Wooden retablo panels will be provided, allowing the focus to remain on painting techniques, pattern creation, and visual storytelling.
Age / Skill Level:
Teens (15-19) and adults (20 and up). Suitable for beginners, practicing artists, and
educators.
Where:
This class will be indoors in our Dining Hall in the main Harwood Art Center Building. 1114 7th St NW 87102

Saturday April 18th: 10am-3pm
Materials(What to Bring):
Materials will be provided by the teaching artist. Note: a $30 material fee is included in the price of the workshop.
About the Teaching Artist:
Elana Gonzales is an Albuquerque-based artist working in acrylic, gouache, and oil. Her illustrative work draws on New Mexican folkloric motifs and is characterized by maximalist compositions and vibrant color. She is active in NM art shows.
