Restoration House in Rochester was originally several medieval buildings but by 1667 these had been transformed into a city mansion and the seat of Sir Francis Clerke. The house takes its name from the stay of King Charles II on the eve of the Restoration. It is also the Satis House of Dickens’ “Great Expectations”, the home of Miss Havisham.
Over the years the house has been thoughtfully and tastefully restored by the current owners Robert Tucker and Jonathan Wilmot. It’s a feast for the eyes with delightful period interiors and houses a treasure trove of beautiful paintings, furniture, and decorative objects.
I am delighted that Robert Tucker will be escorting the group around the house and having visited in the past I know guests will have a fascinating and enlightening afternoon not only in the house but in the garden as well. There is much to see in Rochester including Rochester Cathedral and Castle, the Guildhall museum and the recently refurbished Eastgate House, so why not make a day of it on the Medway? You will not be disappointed!
Rochester is a just over a 30 minute by train from London Victoria or London St Pancras train stations and the house is a 10-minute walk from the station.
