Researching a Cherokee ancestor involves a multifaceted approach that incorporates various historical records and resources. Understanding the importance of your ancestor’s location within the context of Cherokee history is essential. Mr. Norris will provide insights into the diverse avenues available for conducting this research, going beyond traditional sources like census, birth, death, and marriage records. By exploring these various records and resources, researchers can piece together a comprehensive narrative of their Cherokee ancestors' lives, tracing their journey from the East to the West and documenting their experiences within the Cherokee Nation. These same methodologies used in researching Cherokee ancestry can be applied to researching other Native American tribes as well. Gene Norris is currently the Senior Genealogist at the Cherokee National Research Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He began his journey as a genealogist in 1982 as a novice but over the last 42 years has honed his skills in the art of family history research. In 1994, he began working with historical records associated with the Cherokee Nation and gained a great knowledge of historical facts regarding the Cherokee. He began his career as Senior Genealogist with the Cherokee Heritage Center in 2003 and has continued in that capacity since 2020 with the newly established Cherokee National Research Center. He has presented at numerous conferences and seminars over the span of his career.
