About this Event

Reptiles of Western North Carolina

with Carlton Burke

Thursday, March 19 | 12 – 4pm

BRN - Core

The Southern Appalachian Mountain region hosts an interesting combination of cold-blooded reptiles, based largely on various factors such as the diverse mountain elevations and the unique forest and other habitat types. Species here range from the endangered and threatened Bog Turtle and Timber Rattlesnake to more common species such as the Black Rat Snake and Northern Fence Lizard. Participants in this class will learn about the various reptile species in western North Carolina, their life cycles and habitats, and threats and conservation efforts in place to protect them. In addition, some live mountain reptiles will be joining us as special guests.

Carlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. Carlton co-hosts a weekly radio program NATURE NEWS and is also a NC state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
