Renee Christine moves through the world as an observer. Across the six tracks of her poignant debut EP, Appalachia, she documents the pain of communities she has lived in, passed through, and studied. “I’m really interested in the stories of people, and how they’re a part of the landscape they live in,” Christine explains. “There’s a lot of unmetabolized pain.”
The Americana singer-songwriter and cellist spins tales of misfortune, resilience, and Appalachian lore over impassioned string arrangements, finger-picked guitar, and percussion. A long-distance backpacker with a degree in parks and recreation, Christine never planned to pursue music—until a series of personal setbacks sparked a songwriting renaissance while she was living at home after college.
While sharing original songs and reimagined covers online, accompanying herself on cello, Christine found a dedicated audience drawn to her guttural voice and unflinching subject matter. In the lineage of outspoken artists like Hozier and Hayley Williams, she writes modern protest music rooted in empathy and urgency. On breakthrough singles “Lehigh Valley” and “Turtle Island,” Christine candidly addresses the hardships of small-town America: Ever since the devils in the White House gutted this place / Well, the bullet and the bottle get around.
Raised outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and now based near Phoenix, Arizona, Christine's time backpacking across the country—connecting with people across the political spectrum—deepened her commitment to writing about climate justice, power, and lived experience. Growing up in a music-loving family, she played cello and guitar, wrote poetry, and absorbed her mom’s Neil Young, John Gorka, and Simon & Garfunkel records.
Produced by Doug Schadt (Maggie Rogers, Ashe), Appalachia fuses classic singer-songwriter sensibility with a folk-punk edge, capturing the raw intensity of Christine's acoustic performances. From hiking the Mason–Dixon Line to working in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Christine isn’t attached to any one place—it’s the people who inspire her.
