About this Event
As part of the Rendition x Fréa Renewing Roots exhibition at the1912 Mill, Sunny Bank Mills, artist Fiona Cahill is offering a series of free workshops open to the public.
During this one hour workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to handmake their own paper and create a piece of autocartography under Fiona's expert guidance.
Introduction 10 min
Meet the artist. Learn about the various mediums and process Fiona uses to create, and the story behind Rendition. For Fiona, papermaking is
‘a ritualised meditative process that allows me to navigate my grief.’
Papermaking 25 min
Handmade paper is created by blending soaked paper scraps into pulp, adding organic materials*, spreading the mixture over a mold and deckle, draining the water, and drying the pressed sheet. This recycling process transforms paper scraps and natural elements into new, textured paper.
Autocartography 25 min
Autocartography is a process which maps the self. Using techniques from the surrealist art movement to make connections and meaning, the process of mark making on handmade paper will start to open up a conversation between the maker and the material.
What to bring
*Papermaking can be an act of memorial or reflection. Participants are invited to bring any organic material (leaves, moss, petals, soil) that holds significance for them. This could be a flower or a plant that reminds you of a loved one or something that simply brings you joy. These can be incorporated into the paper being made. If you do not wish to bring anything with you, there will be plenty of materials from the grounds of Sunnybank Mills for you to choose from on the day.
