Fondatrice du Dancemobile (1967) à New York ainsi que de la célèbre compagnie de danse Bangarra Dance Theatre en Australie, le parcours de Johnson témoigne du pouvoir transformateur de la danse en tant que catalyseur du changement social.

Dans le cadre de sa tournée européenne, la choréographe africaine-américaine revient sur sa vision artistique révolutionnaire des années 1970 à nos jours. Dès son arrivée en Australie en 1972 en tant que danseuse principale de la compagnie d'Eleo Pomare, elle bouscule les normes artistiques et politiques en modifiant le regard euro-centrique qui prévalait dans le monde de la danse australienne. Johnson crée un mouvement de danse urbaine où se croisent modernité et traditions aborigènes de plus de 60.000 ans, incitant des artistes des Premières Nations à porter leurs luttes sur la scène mondiale.

A travers des performances emblématiques et protestataires, comme l'inoubliable Embassy Dance, présentée devant le Parlement à Canberra en 1972, Johnson, aujourd'hui octogénaire, partage avec nous les moments forts de sa carrière et son impact sur la danse contemporaine aborigène australienne.
Directrice artistique émérite de NAISDA Dance College en Australie, qu’elle a fondé en 1976, Carole Y. Johnson est intronisée au Hall of Fame de l'Australian Dance Awards en 1999. Elle a reçu en 2003 la Centenary Medal en reconnaissance des services rendus à la société australienne et à la communauté des Premières Nations australienne par le biais de la danse. Elle a également reçu une citation de la ville de Philadelphie pour son travail novateur en Australie.

L’intervention de Carole sera accompagnée d'une projection du film rare, récemment restauré par le National Film & Sound and Archive en Australie, Tjintu Pakani-Sunrise Awakening de la réalisatrice Ande Reese Kindryd (48 min, 1976, Australie), un documentaire primé sur la naissance du mouvement artistique urbain aborigène des années 1970.

La discussion avec Carole Y Johnson sera animée par Greta Morton Elangué (commissaire, historienne diplomée de l'EHESS, cinéaste et fondatrice du Festival du Cinéma Aborigène Australien à Paris)

Join us at the Australian Embassy in Paris for an exceptional evening with the African-american choreographer Carole Y. Johnson, a pioneering figure in the global dance community.

As the founder of Dancemobile (1967) in New York and the critically acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre in Australia, Johnson's journey attests to the transformative power of dance as a catalyst for social change.

As part of her European tour, Johnson reflects on her revolutionary artistic vision from the 1970s to the present day. From her arrival in Australia in 1972 as the principal dancer for the Eleo Pomare Dance Company, her creative work has disrupted and re-shaped both artistic and political norms by challenging the Eurocentric gaze that prevailed in the Australian dance world. Johnson ignited a movement of urban dance that blended modern dance techniques with 60,000 year old First Nations Traditions , inspiring First Nations artists to bring their struggle to the global stage.

Through dance performances which celebrated politcal empowerment, such as the Embassy Dance, presented in front of Parliament House in Canberra in 1972, Johnson, now in her eighties, shares with us the highlights of her career and her impact on contemporary Australian First Nations dance.

Today Emeritus Artistic Director of the NAISDA Dance College in Australia, which she founded in 1976, Carole Y. Johnson was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Australian Dance Awards in 1999. In 2003, she was awarded the Centenary Medal in recognition of her services to Australian society and the Australian First Nations community through dance. She also received a citation from the city of Philadelphia for her innovative work in Australia.

Carole Y Johnson's presentation will be accompanied by a screening of the rare film, recently restored by the National Film & Sound and Archive in Australia, "Tjintu Pakani-Sunrise Awakening" by director Ande Reese Kindryd (48 min, 1976, Australia), an award-winning documentary about the birth of the urban Australian First Nations artistic movement of the 1970s.

Johnson will be joined in conversation with Greta Morton Elangué, curator, researcher, EHESS History graduate and Founder of the Festival du Cinéma Aborigène Australien à Paris.
