REMEMBERING THE BENGAL FAMINE OF 1943
Manchester Museum and the History Department of University of Manchester, in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum North will hold a memorial event to commemorate the victims of the Bengal Famine 1943. Marking 80 years of the end of WW2 and just over 80 years of the Bengal Famine, this year is a poignant moment to remember at least three million Indians, all British subjects, who lost their lives in a war that was not of their own making.
It was one of the largest losses of civilian life on the Allied side, yet there is no memorial or even a plaque to the victims anywhere in the world. This memorial event, believed to be the first of its kind, will reflect on those who perished, hear testimony from eyewitnesses, have performances on the resonance today and discuss the continuing legacy of war and starvation. We will be joined by BBC journalist, Kavita Puri, creator of the landmark BBC podcast Three Million, which has inspired this event.
