About this Event

The American Civil War was not only a clash of armies and ideologies but also a crucible in which bonds were formed. Loyalty, friendship, family, and even enmity were shaped and tested both on the battlefield and within the halls of government across a divided nation.



The 2026 ACWM Symposium explores the human connections that emerged from conflict. It will be from Friday, February 13 through Sunday, February 15.

Battlefield Tour—Overland Campaign (Meet at Germanna Visitor Center)
Host: Chuck Young

Info: Join us for a day exploring key sites of the Overland Campaign—a pivotal 1864 series of Civil War battles between Union General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Start Location: Meet at Germanna Visitor Center (2062 Germanna Hwy, Locust Grove, VA), near the spot where Grant’s army began its push across the Rapidan River.

Tour Format: This is a caravan tour, meaning participants will drive their own vehicles and follow the group to each stop. An ACWM historic site interpreter will lead the tour, sharing insights and stories at each battlefield along the way.

Stops Include:
•Wilderness Battlefield – Saunders Field & Widow Tapp Farm
•Spotsylvania Courthouse Battlefield – Laurel Hill, the Muleshoe, and fortification exhibit
•North Anna Battlefield
•Totopotomoy Creek Battlefield
•Cold Harbor Battlefield (with time to explore the earthworks)

Battlefield Tour—Appomattox Campaign

Info: Trace the final days of the Civil War on this immersive journey following General Lee’s retreat and the Confederate Army’s path to surrender at Appomattox.

Start Location: Meet at ACWM–Tredegar (Richmond, VA), where the tour begins by following the retreat route of General Richard S. Ewell’s Richmond defense forces.

Tour Format: This is a caravan tour, meaning participants will drive their own vehicles and follow along to each site. An ACWM historic site interpreter will provide historical overviews at every stop.

Stops Include:
•Branch’s Baptist Church – where General Custis Lee’s troops joined the retreat
•Mt. Zion Road near Jetersville – story of Amelia Court House & the turn west
•Deatonville and Sayler’s Creek Battlefield (VSP)
•Farmville & Cumberland Church Battlefield
•Clifton – Grant’s headquarters, April 8–9
•New Hope Church – Confederate rear guard, April 8–9
•Final Stop: ACWM–Appomattox – includes a final talk & time for a self-guided museum tour
