
About this Event
The Registry of Deeds was established by an Act of the Irish Parliament in 1707 and is one of the oldest continuously functioning state offices in Ireland. Organised by Tailte Éireann, this talk by Dr. Brendan Twomey reviews the careers of the men who ran the Registry of Deeds in its first 100 years, during which more than six hundred thousand deeds were registered.
Tailte Éireann provides property registration system, national mapping and property valuation service for the State, and are custodians of Irish land records including Registry of Deeds archives.
Speaker Biography
Dr. Brendan Twomey is a retired banker. In 2018 he completed his PhD in TCD entitled
Personal Financial Management in Early Eighteenth-Century Ireland: Practices, participants, and outcomes. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland studying the vast quantity of financial, social and economic data embedded in the archive of the Registry of Deeds (founded 1707).
