Join us on Saturday, May 11 at 7:30pm in St. Paul’s Chapel as legendary bassist Reggie Workman presents an evening of jazz performance, spoken word, and movement.
A woman pulls at a thick rope that creates a barrier between her and the rest of the world—and finds resilience and transcendence. Pulling was created by Workman in collaboration with actor Ayana Workman (Rustin, Jessica Jones) and directed by choreographer, writer, and poet Maya Milenovic Workman.

Reggie Workman is recognized as one of the most technically gifted American avant-garde jazz and hard-bop double bassists in history. A composer, jazz advocate, and educator extraordinaire, his musical style ranges from bop to post-bop and beyond. Although best known for his work with John Coltrane and Art Blakey, he has collaborated with a range of notable artists. Workman has received numerous awards and fellowships, including an NEA Jazz Master Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Doris Duke Impact Award.
New York City native Ayana Workman first acted professionally as Juliet in the Public Theatre’s Mobile Unit production of Romeo and Juliet. She buttressed her stage resume with roles in Hamlet, Macbeth, The Winter’s Tale, and Julius Caesar and performed internationally at the National Theatre in Slovenia and London’s legendary Globe Theatre. Her film work includes Rustin and Jessica Jones, Person of Interest. She is currently a producer of Reggie Workman: Immortal, a documentary about her father.
Maya Milenovic Workman is a writer, director, choreographer, and poet. Together with Reggie Workman, she created original works such as Synthesis, Abstractions, Frugal Meal, Garden of Earthly Delights, and numerous others. Workman collaborated with theatre director Tomaž Pandur in Scheherazade and Faust, and she wrote, filmed, and produced I Hear with My Eyes, Guernica Continuum, Virtual Truth, and Ophelia’s Ocean (for which she received a Guggenheim Fellowship).
