About this Event
Just Write presents a workshop delivered by Annie Lord
As leaves unfurl, and new shoots emerge from the soil, we consider the act of regeneration, and how to embody this process in our writing. Throughout the workshop we’ll take inspiration from the natural world, reflecting on how we can imbue our own creative practices with the impulse to grow and develop.
Led by writer and visual artist, Annie Lord, this workshop explores the act of writing by hand. How does our medium influence our writing voice: from writing with charcoal that splinters and shatters, to a wide paint brush loaded with paint, the uniform mark of a biro, or a smooth, soft pencil. We’ll discover how to regenerate and refresh our writing, letting these different materials influence the tone, sensibility, and rhythm of our words. This will be a playful session where you’ll get the chance to try out handmade charcoal, paints, and inks, as well as a variety of other art materials. No art experience or neat handwriting required; this is a chance to experiment and generate new possibilities within our writing.
All materials supplied, but feel free to bring along any of your favourite pens, pencils, and notebooks.
About Annie:
Annie Lord is a writer and artist based in Edinburgh. She studied sculpture at The Slade before developing her work to encompass writing, storytelling and community-based practice. Annie’s art explores how we interact with the physical world – transforming plants, animals and minerals into objects of artistic, scientific and domestic value. Annie was shortlisted for the 2023 Nan Shepherd Prize for underrepresented voices in nature writing and is currently developing her manuscript. She is represented by Caro Clarke at Portobello Literary.
Just Write was established by Blue Kirkhope in April 2023 to create an informal, relaxing, safe and motivating space for writers from Glasgow and beyond to come together and focus on their craft. You are warmly invited to join us on the last Thursday of every month at Print Culture in Merchant City. Come along, Just Write.
Note for attendees: 15 attendees maximum. Snacks, tea and milk will be provided, but we ask that you please bring along your own mug if you want a cuppa!
