About Refugee Week.
Refugee Week is Australia’s peak annual celebration recognising the strength, courage, and contribution of refugees to our communities.
Held each year in June, during the week that includes World Refugee Day (20 June), Refugee Week invites communities across the country to pause, listen, learn - and act.
The week began in the 1980s as a modest local initiative, driven by advocates who believed refugees should be recognised not only for what they have survived, but for what they bring.
That belief grew legs. Then momentum. Then history.
Over time, Refugee Week expanded from a single procession into a national movement, helping pave the way for the United Nations to establish World Refugee Day in 2001. Australia’s Refugee Week now aligns with this global moment - a deliberate return to the original dream of a shared international celebration.
Today, Refugee Week is marked by hundreds of events across Australia:music and art, talks and forums, school programs, community meals, sporting events, digital gatherings, and moments of quiet reflection. Some are loud. Some are gentle. All are necessary.
At its heart, Refugee Week exists to: build understanding about who refugees are and why they seek safety acknowledge the challenges faced before and after arrival celebrate the cultural, social, and economic contributions of refugees encourage welcoming, inclusive communities inspire practical action and reflection across services, institutions, and everyday life.
It is not about charity. It is about recognition. And about remembering that hospitality - real hospitality - has always been how societies endure.
